L.

My friend has endured many tragedies, and at 53 finds herself living with her mother, a hoarder*. She has gathered up bags full of garbage that her mother won’t let her toss. There are three bedrooms, but months into this new living arrangement she sleeps on the couch. She hasn’t uncovered a bed yet.

*It feels like a betrayal to tell something she told me in confidence, but I know this is a safe place to repeat her story.

  1. That must be so very hard for her.

  2. At 53 sleeping on her mom's sofa, how sad for her. I hope better things come her way.

    1. She's overdue for something good. Widowed young, 2nd marriage to a man with bipolar disorder and substance abuse issues, car accident 10 years ago with all 4 kids and now she can't work, loaned a large part of the settlement to her brother and he never paid her back... Now, thanks to him, she is also broke.

  3. I am beginning to feel that hoarding is not that uncommon. I once had a friend set me up with a hoarder... although she said she wasn't aware that he was one.

    1. I think I remember this. Was he also the guy who didn't care about food?

    2. Yes, he would... wait, maybe I'll write a post about this.

  4. As the child of hoarders, I feel for her. When I visited the house last week, I refused to pee inside.
