The hag pins me down, paralyzed in every limb until I can move a hand or jiggle a foot. Sometimes my arm will break free of her hold first and swing out, breaking the spell, sending her back to her hag-hole. Sometimes I’ll fall back to sleep, only to find she hasn’t really left. Sometimes she stays away for months.

Book #10 - To Kill a Mockingbird
I didn’t have to read it in high school, though I’m not sure why. People older than I remember having it as assigned reading, as do people who are younger. I guess I just fell in a narrow band of students not introduced to Atticus and Scout. I picked it up many years later when a friend told me how much the story meant to her, and how she was on her fifth dog-eared copy. She lends them out, and then buys herself another copy, unable to bear its absence. She loaned it to me. I couldn’t put it down.
She is on her sixth copy.

DeleteDo you think you have sleep paralysis? I've had what I think is it occasionally -- my dreams are similar but something is pulling me off the bed. (Did I write about that somewhere this year?)
ReplyDeleteYes. I definitely have episodes of sleep paralysis. At least now I know what's happening, even while it's happening.
