Are you there God? It's me, Sabine

By grade five I found it unbearable that I didn’t yet have my period, so I started faking it. “I’m gonna ask Mr. B. if I can stay in for recess because of cramps,” I said, womanlyish. Janice stole my thunder and ran to him. “I have cramps,” she said. “Can I stay in at recess?”

  1. Everyone had a Janice, I think. But not everyone had their period at age 10.

    2. Oh absolutely. I endured heavy, flooding periods until my late 40s when it all, thankfully, shut down. My daughter started hers around 10, poor kid. I remember watching her giddily tell her friends at choir practice. I think the thrill was gone by month #2.
