Carbs and Me - Part 4

And when I started eating breakfast, I started craving lunch. But I was craving it by 10:00 am. So I’d stave it off with something from the cafeteria, like maybe another muffin, or a scone but skipping the butter because butter is fat and fat makes you fat*. And I kept getting bigger and bigger.

*I no longer believe this

Carbs and Me - part 3

Then I discovered bagels. And muffins. And while I used to avoid breakfast because I just didn’t wake up hungry, now I woke up with a growling stomach that I silenced with toast or cereal or Montreal Bagels*. But not eggs and bacon, because I was starting to gain weight, and those things had fat.

*Soooo superior to all other bagels

Carbs and Me - Part 2

I wasn’t living a consciously low-carb life, mind. I didn’t turn down potatoes or root veggies, and I didn’t say no to fresh fruit ever. But processed, empty carbs, the kind that spike your blood sugar and call out insulin and over time make you more and more resistant to insulin – those carbs I avoided.

Carbs and me - Part 1

Through to my early twenties, I had no real taste for dessert. Even at family gatherings, where the dessert table sagged under the weight of pies and cheesecakes and squares, I was all about the savoury foods, and was often too full to be interested in dessert. And I was skinny. And it was effortless.

Coffee

I have one cup of coffee a day – sometimes two. I’m not even sure I like coffee but I certainly crave it. I do like tea, and you would think I could switch my morning cup out for a cup of Earl Gray, but I can’t. Damn you, Juan Valdez. I just can’t quite you.

Peanut butter

My kids aren’t fussy eaters, but they demanded smooth peanut butter through the years. Yesterday, shopping, I asked Paul which he preferred. As far as he is concerned, he tells me, there is no real difference. How did I not know this about him? Of course there is a difference. I bought myself the chunky.

Lazy post - here is a link you all should try*

I’m not sure how to talk about food, so today I think I’ll just link you all to a recipe I love. Now that it’s spring, I’ll likely make a lot of these. Each time, I will say to myself but the carbs, and each time I will overrule myself. Because Strawberry-chicken-bacon pizza is amazing.

Cheese Girls

Cheese girls* are ruining my efforts to avoid carbs. Not regular ones made with white bread and Kraft singles – I happily avoid those. I’m talking the brie and poached pear and caramelized onion cheese girls I had last week. Or the brie and bacon and sliced strawberry on rye cheese girls I made last night.

*cheese girls – what my kids called grilled cheese sandwiches when they were young, and what we’ve called them ever since.

Campbells, anyone?

My mother’s generation was the first to really tackle full-time employment outside the house. They didn’t negotiate the division of household duties well when taking on their 9-5, and retained responsibility for almost all the work their mothers and grandmothers did around the home. Including the cooking. My generation ate a lot of canned soup.
