One, two, three. Gone forever.
My grandfather's cancer was one of those fast-moving wildfires that didn't give him or the people who loved him time to come to terms with his mortality. My grandmother was lost, but she believed deeply in two things. They would be together again in death, and he would come to her three times in her dreams. The first time was shortly after he died. She woke up and he was beside her in bed, telling her she couldn't keep crying. It was a brief visit. The second time was a bit later, but within a few months, I think. She welcomed his second visit, but dreaded knowing she would only get one more. I don't know when, or if, the third visit happened.

Wow, this one gave me goosebumps. I'd never heard about dreaming about a loved one three times after their death. Is it something your grandmother learned from someone else or was it hers alone?
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't know. I asked my mother about it today and was surprised to learn it wasn't something my grandmother had ever mentioned to her.
DeleteGood question, Dona. I'll try to check back and see if Sabine comments...
ReplyDeleteWith all the reading I've done on the subject, I don't remember seeing anything about three visits being the standard, so I think it was something your grandmother just knew would happen for her.
ReplyDeleteMaybe - she's the only one I've ever heard say it.
DeleteThis piece wrings my heart. "Gone forever."
